More about Kirsty MacColl's Titanic Days...

“a gloriously harmonious melange of frustration and melancholy” – The Times on the original 1994 edition.

ZTT Records presents Titanic Days, a special remaster and re-release of Kirsty MacColl’s penultimate album. Expanded with a whole extra disc of demos, outtakes, remixes and rare live tracks, this is the definitive edition of the late singer songwriter’s cult classic. As Pause & Play once noted, “in a way, it’s her own Pet Sounds.”

Originally released in 1994, Titanic Days was the follow-up to her best-known album, Electric Landlady and the single Walking Down Madison. It was written in collaboration with Fairground Attraction’s Mark E Nevin who has provided archive demo tracks and extensive liner notes for this release.

“Great pop tunes, combined with biting political comment and touching personal confessions” is Nevin’s appraisal of Kirsty’s music, “all this with her fantastic multi-layered vocal arrangements, painstakingly woven together to create a sound that was her’s alone.” Those distinctive vocal arrangements are another of MacColl’s lasting legacies, appearing on records by the Rolling Stones, Talking Heads, Van Morrison and Morrissey.

This new edition of Titanic Days has been produced with the complete cooperation of Jean MacColl, Kirsty’s mother whose campaign to bring those responsible for her death to justice - www.justiceforkirsty.org - was recently the subject of a BBC4 documentary. No one has yet been brought to trial for Kirsty’s death, who was killed in December 2000 while scubadiving in Mexico, by a powerboat sailing in waters reserved for swimmers.

Titanic Days is the finale of four major MacColl reissues in 2005. February saw 1991’s Electric Landlady and 1989’s Kite followed by From Croydon to Cuba, an box set released in March and featuring several tracks from this release. As Kirsty MacColl famously said:

“If a record doesn't make you think, laugh or dance – ideally all three – then it's a waste of vinyl.” – Kirsty MacColl

The deluxe edition of Titanic Days is now on sale in the Zang Tuum Shop.
